HSBC UK's new industry-leading ‘green’ building is the first in Birmingham to be constructed to LEED (Leadership in Environmental and Energy Design) Gold accreditation, with sustainability at the heart of its design.

About the project

HSBC UK’s new 11-storey, 210,000 sq ft headquarters in Birmingham is home to around 2,500 employees from its retail and commercial banks as well as support staff who help run the day-to-day operations. Located at 1 Centenary Square, which forms part of the Arena Central development, the site was previously home to the famous ATV Television Studios where a number of iconic television programmes were filmed.

Application

All three FG Wilson sets have Easygen 3500 controllers for synchronisation with each other and with the mains supply at multiple points via a tri PLC energy management system which was installed by the ENMS contractor. This enabled us to fully utilise the controllers dwell time operation during mains paralleling controlled via a third-party control system.

Located in the basement of the building, in a plant room designed by us, the generators feature high level exhaust flue discharge on the ninth floor. With all three sets running, the acoustics are 65 dba at one metre.

Acoustics and air flows are further enhanced by a fire damper which pulls additional air via an attenuated route which was designed to enhance the air flows in order to accommodate the building design which had the discharge and inlets on the same external wall plane.

The system was reactive load bank tested to prove the air flows to the client. To further demonstrate the resilience of the building infrastructure, the full system was IST tested and demonstrated to the client’s design team.

Why DTG

Our proven technical capabilities in large scale infrastructure projects are second to none, and our clients rely on us to deliver robust standby power solutions for a wide variety of applications.

Ian Stuart, CEO of HSBC UK, said: We chose to locate our new head office in Birmingham because it’s a dynamic and entrepreneurial city, offering an attractive home for businesses and people at the heart of the UK. I am proud that this new building has been designed to the highest environmental standards.
