Orkney Hospital

NHS Orkney’s new £64million healthcare facility, The Balfour, has been hailed as among the world’s best. We have delivered mission-critical standby power for this new facility that brings together the island’s NHS services under one roof.

About the project

NHS Orkney’s new £64million healthcare facility, The Balfour, has been hailed as among the world’s best. Built by Robertson, the hospital has been designed to put people first and make a positive contribution to the environment, local community and economy – transforming the way healthcare services are delivered on the islands. The building design, by Keppie, is strong and contemporary, rooted in the culture and context of Orkney, and in Kirkwall in particular. The new facility brings together the island’s NHS services under one roof, including accident and emergency, GP, dental and other specialist resources.

Power supplied

Two 1,250 kVA low voltage generator sets.

Application

The two generators are each enclosed in 75 dba containers complete with day tanks. We also supplied two 40,000 litre bulk fuel tanks - one tank for the boiler/heating and one for the generators to achieve 200 hours autonomy in case of emergency power outage. The generators are fitted with CoMap SPTM controls from the factory which are interfaced to the A and B switchboards on site for full mains synchronisation in compliance with G59-3 for short term parallel operation. Each set is stand alone with A and B switch room manual bus coupling possible via Castell interlocked incomers to allow for future maintenance and resilience. The generators were FAT tested at our HQ before being installed at site in Orkney.

Cathie Cowan, NHS Orkney Chief Executive, said: This development will match our aspirations to deliver the highest quality care and services from fit-for-purpose facilities. Travelling outside of Orkney for routine care will become a thing of the past for many.”
