Institute for Cancer Research

The Institute of Cancer Research (ICR) is one of the world’s most influential cancer research organisations. We supplied and installed the back-up power solution for ICR’s new £75m state-of-the-art centre for cancer drug discovery in London.

About the project

Founded in 1909, The Institute of Cancer Research (ICR) is one of the world’s most influential cancer research organisations and undertakes world-class research designed to improve outcomes for people with cancer. It has been driving scientific discoveries on cancer and its treatment for more than 100 years and is internationally renowned for work in cancer genetics, cancer biology and personalised medicine.

DTGen supplied and installed the back-up power solution for ICR’s new £75m state-of-the-art centre for cancer drug discovery in London. This new facility will create more and better drugs for cancer patients.

Power supplied

We supplied one prime power rated 1250 kVA standby diesel generator set complete with all acoustic equipment to satisfy a maximum noise level of 85 dBA @ 1m measured at the inlet and discharge louvres to the diesel plantroom. The generator is fitted with a ComAp control panel and is capable of synchronising the generator output with the mains source. UK Power Networks, the local distribution network operator, witnessed the testing of the generator paralleling function and the operation of the G99 protection device, a mandatory component protecting the grid from any instabilities detected on the site’s power distribution network.

The main fuel storage tanks, which are buried underground due to space constraints, together with the day tank in the plantroom, provide a total of 34 hours of fuel storage. This is below the recommended HTM06 NHS specification but agreed as a derogation with the client.

Application

The project involved an extension to the site’s existing 11kV ring network and the addition of a new LV switchboard and LV generator set. The generator provides essential back up to the ICR facilities in the event of a mains failure.

Why DTGen?

Health institutions and major NHS trusts the length and breadth of the UK rely on us to provide resilient standby power solutions.

Chris Connors, Sales Manager – Power Solutions, said: "We are proud to have supported the development of this world-class centre for cancer drug discovery. We have vast experience in the healthcare sector, including the delivery of projects to HTM06 specification, and we take our responsibilities here very seriously. We are always keen to share our knowledge and expertise with partners in the delivery of such projects.
